ODI-MC Pty Ltd (trading as ODI - Modular Computers) is a technology startup company based in Alexandria, Sydney that is currently designing and building a next-generation computing platform that will allow end-users to easily construct and upgrade computing and home entertainment devices using stackable modules.
The ODI Modular Computer platform consists of a suite of different hardware modules that can be assembled together to create commonly used devices. Between the Modules, resources are shared and an inherent advantage of the modular architecture is that upgrading devices is a breeze (even for technologically-inexperienced users) and components that would normally be thrown out with an upgrade (eg. PC Power Supply) form a shared resource in the system. This means that useable components won’t be thrown away when parts of the platform are upgraded, resulting in an increase in useable lifetime from shared components, costing less in the long term and helping the environment though decreased electronic waste.
ODI-MC consists of three key people, Sean O'Dwyer (Inventor / Managing Director), Philip Cadell (Software & Electronics Engineering) and Ben Bishop (Mechanical Engineering). All three met while working at Australian Defence company Metal Storm Limited where they contributed significantly to the company's core technology in their respective fields before leaving the company between 2007-2009.
The Company plans to debut the Modular Computer platform at the Consumer Electronics Show in 2011 (Las Vegas) and so has entered into a joint venture with Sydney-based electronic design company LX-Innovations Pty Ltd in order to produce the Alpha prototype of the Modular Computer platform. The Modular Computer platform will fully support both Microsoft Windows and Linux operating systems.
ODI-MC is fully detailing the background concept as well as the design and build of the technology through its development blog at http://odwyerinnovations.com/mc/.
