Subsistence is a Bendigo owned business that seeks to create a small economy based on local bushfood products. Whereas industrialism is a way ahead based on monetary capital and technology, subsistence is a way ahead based on relationship and land.
At present it is virtually impossible for us to know the economic history or the ecological cost of the products we buy; the origins of the products are typically too distant and too scattered and the processes of trade, manufacture, transport and marketing, too complex. We must take back into our own power, a significant portion of economic responsibility by finding out the origins of our products and making informed choices. The greater portion of products we utilise must be at least partially locally produced.
Subsistence has developed it's first product, the Drooping Cassinia Native Herbal Tea. The tea is collected in the Bendigo region and is being sold in a small number of shops. This product was developed during the first year of operation, which has just passed, while the owner was on the State Government's NEIS scheme. This native herbal tea is the first in a range of teas that Subsistence is working on. Subsistence now seeks venture capital so that the full range of Bendigo Bush Teas can be developed and marketed.
