Augmented Reality Down by the Seashore

By Rachel Youens on Thursday, October 29th, 2009

It has been impressive how Aussie mobile companies have been stepping up to offer AR development and now one company is using the annual Sculpture by the Sea event as a showcase for the technology. This year, attendees for the Bondi art event will be able to use 3GS or Android phones to reveal more info about the sculptures and link to mobile sites. The application is developed by Sydney-based IPitch member MOB labs employing Layar. To get the app, you must first download Layar then search for “sculpture.” If you’re reading this on your phone now, you can use this link.

MOB CEO Rob Manson has organized a special augmented reality meetup group to display the app next Thursday and is inviting local tech enthusiasts to come and see it in action. Tech writer Brad Howarth has written an extensively researched piece in his Bootstrappr column about Aussies employing AR and gives a preview to Brisbane startup My247’s new experiment with AR using Sydney company Tigerspike. Rob will also be conducting a public speech on how AR is affecting art in public spaces at the Sculpture by the Sea conference Monday, and then will turnaround and do a more business focused presentation at the Sydney Mobile Monday event along with Insqribe, who are also dabbling in AR.

(Oh..and while we’re at it...an interesting article on why, while AR is super awesome, VCs and angels may not be jumping to fund it)
