After a last minute rush to seek out some good startups to pitch, the Innovation Bay dinner this week ended up with pitches from carbon accounting group Village Green and photo uploading and sales site PhotoArtGallery. Similar to successful art sales site RedBubble, PhotoArtGallery allows photographers to upload their work and sell print to others as well as communicate in forum about technique and style. As of March the startup, led by CEO Andrew Coppin was still bootstrapped. Startup Village Green, similar to the site TradeSlot which is headed up by the team behind successful ad sales system AdSlot, provides SaaS for reporting, compliance and education for energy efficiency and is headed up by CEO Doug Smith.
• On the topic of TradeSlot, Andrew Barlow has resigned as chairman and director of Webfirm Group Limited and will now become executive chairman of AdSlot. Barlow was appointed to Webfirm’s board of directors in October 2007 and became chairman in December 2007. Adrian Giles, a member of Webfirm’s board, will succeed Mr Barlow as chairman of Webfirm Group.
• Melbourne’s Student Entrepreneurs/Agents of Change have announced a poll for their upcoming Napkin Competition, based around startup ideas. The student group is trying to determine a prize for the 2010 event and are polling prospective entrants on what would be the best incentive between cash, an internship or a Sydney trip. The organization also announced the finalists for the IdeaPitch event who will go on to the final competition Thursday the 15th.
• BarCamp Brisbane takes place next weekend and are seeking some small sponsorship. IPitch will also be on hand talking to some Brizzy startups and covering the tech scene up there, such as athletic startup Trackster. If you’re in the area, send us an email.
• Melbourne startup Rentoid narrowly missed a win at the Melbourne Business 3000 awards, where streetwear startup Haul won last year. The awards dinner for the City of Sydney Business Awards is approaching on October 20th where MyNetFone, Ziller, Sentia, IT Smart Solutions and Logicall Communications are all finalists.
• In a David and Goliath-like tale, Australian entrepreneur Franco Lagudi is taking on eBay with his global sales site SOC Exchange. For a $1 a month, or $10 flat rate for a year, members can have their own page on the site to list and sell as many objects as they would like. He’s starting off the battle offering a $10 referral fee for members.
• Mobile Monday Melbourne has announced there will be no October event. One of the event’s organizers, Antony McGregor Dey with mobile marketing company QMCodes, is currently in the US working with publishing house Harper Collins.
