If you haven’t yet noticed the bike ads making their way around the Sydney CBD, Anthill Magazine has extended the entry period for the Cool Company awards by a week, and the entry period closes this Friday the 9th. Launched in 2006 to recognize Australian companies doing things a bit differently, past winners include Atlassian and RedBubble.
• And while we’re talking about Atlassian, if you’re in the Sydney it’s hard to get down to Darling Harbour without spotting the company’s new digs. After a lunch with Tom and Fenn of Melbourne startup Adioso, we were all surprised to catch a glimpse of the Atlassian logo as we walked across the Pyrmont Bridge. It looks like the company will be inviting friends and prospective employees to check out the new digs at the corner of Sussex and Market on October 29th. You can RSVP your interest here.
• Sydney startup GradConnection has released a redesign of their site from web designers Kwikweb Solutions. The company, which works with employers to help graduates find work and graduate programs around Australia, has also successfully completed its first round of job placements for students and taken the feedback to complete a new addition called GradMaker.
• Australian Web Week has brought a number of internet-related events to Sydney including Ignite and WebJam and this week I met two exciting local startups who are easing into closed beta testing at the Web Week Growth Town event. Organized by Pollenizer’s Mick Liubinskas, Atlassian, Anchor MitchelLake and others, Growth Town is a media and investor-free event where startups are encouraged to speak openly about their struggles and needs. The first of the two startups, Topikality, is headed up by Richard Heycock and Philip Scott, and they will be presenting their topical following service at Web Directions this week. The second startup is headed up by Blind Optimists Hendro Wijaya. Hendro is a regular fixture at Sydney entrepreneurial events and has debuted a previous accounting service called Sand Table. Hendro’s new project is known as Moluko and is billed simply as “eBay meets Facebook.” According to the site almost 600 people have registered interest in the site that allows you to sell to your friends. • Australian companies are quickly jumping on the augmented reality bandwagon (see here and here) and now MOB Labs is touting its ability with the Dutch-developed Layar technology.
